No Effects, 2018
No Effects is a video installation in the form of a karaoke stage. The video monitor corners the space, compelling the viewer to step up behind an active microphone in order to experience the video piece —a stock-photograph karaoke slideshow set to the 90s song “Kill All The White Man” by the punk band NOFX. No Effects proposes a zone where audiences are invited to consider their agency in the process of constructing a dominant racial identity. In this space, the public performance of anti-whiteness is situated as an expression and reinforcement of the same systems that uphold dominant racial narratives.
